Gambling with Care: Three Key Points

Responsible gambling can be summed up in three points:

  • Prevention. A conscious, controlled approach to play reduces the risks of excessive gambling and helps prevent addiction.
  • The operator's duties. §§ 13 to 16 of zákon č. 186/2016 Sb. require operators, Tipsport.net a.s. among them, to offer tools and information for safe gambling. Typically this means financial and time limits, information on risks and self-exclusion, and the protection of minors.
  • The player's own role. Players themselves should also watch their behaviour and recognise the warning signs of problem gambling before they grow into real difficulties.

When to Pay Attention

Gambling addiction does not develop from one day to the next. Pay attention to moments when:

  • you go back to gambling only to win back what you have lost,
  • gambling takes away time meant for work, study or family,
  • you bet more often, or bigger amounts than before,
  • you conceal your gambling from those close to you,
  • you continue even though gambling already leads to debts or arguments,
  • you borrow to play or keep breaking your own financial limits,
  • you feel uneasy, irritable or anxious when you are not playing,
  • you feel worse mentally or physically because of gambling.

If any of these points applies to you or someone around you, consider the prevention tools or speaking to a specialist.

Gambling Restriction Tools and Their Rules

Gambling control tools are part of the user account and can be used by any registered player. Tipsport Vegas provides them on the basis of zákon č. 186/2016 Sb. They fall into financial limits, tools for watching your time and a break from play.

Financial limits

  1. The deposit limit restricts how much money you send to your gaming account per day, week or month. When you reach it, deposits stay blocked until the end of the period.
  2. The bet and loss limit sets a ceiling on total stakes or net loss in a period you select. Once it is reached, the system rejects further bets.

Time and breaks

  1. The time limit defines how long you may play during a day or a week, while the reality check keeps you regularly informed about the time that has passed.
  2. A time-out temporarily excludes you from play for 24 hours, 7 days or 30 days. Logging in and playing are impossible during that time; then the account is reactivated.

Every limit can be introduced, lowered or cancelled in the account. Raising one is permitted only when a protection period of at least 24 hours has elapsed.

The Panic Button in the User Interface

A panic button is available in the user interface for all registered players. Since 1 July 2024, offering it has been compulsory for gambling operators on the basis of § 16bb of zákon č. 186/2016 Sb.

Activating the button triggers an immediate temporary exclusion from all gambling for 48 hours. The player is automatically shut out of all the operator's online platforms and cannot play during that time. At the same point, the system invites them to submit an application for entry into the Register of Excluded Persons (RVO).

Self-Exclusion Step by Step

  • Who: any player, as this right is granted by § 16 and § 16b of zákon č. 186/2016 Sb.
  • What: temporary or permanent exclusion from taking part in gambling.
  • Where: in the user account or through the gambling operator.
  • Reach: an entry in the Register of Excluded Persons (RVO) covers all operators in the Czech Republic.
  • Duration: removal from the RVO can only be requested once one year has passed since the entry.

Who Runs the RVO and Whom It Covers

The Czech Ministry of Finance is in charge of the Register of Excluded Persons (RVO) and keeps it in accordance with zákon č. 186/2016 Sb.

The register contains two groups of people:

  1. players who have requested exclusion,
  2. persons whom the law itself excludes, for example due to debt enforcement, insolvency or drawing certain benefits.

The operator accepts an application for entry in the user account; it can also be confirmed after activating the panic button. Other options are a message to the ministry's data box or filing in person at Czech POINT.

A person on the list may not gamble with any operator holding a Czech licence.

Protecting People Under 18

  • Age limit: under zákon č. 186/2016 Sb., gambling is intended only for people aged 18 and over.
  • Verification: the operator checks the age and identity of every player, for example using BankID or another method.
  • Checks: participation by minors is strictly prohibited and is verified at registration as well as when winnings are paid out.

Indicative Self-Test

Try to answer each question honestly with yes or no. The questions are based on the PGSI (Problem Gambling Severity Index).

  • Do you think it would be good for you to gamble less?
  • Have you spent more on gambling than you intended?
  • Do you play again in order to win back what you lost?
  • Have you ever taken out a loan because of gambling?
  • Has someone around you raised a problem with your gambling?
  • Do you often feel guilt over gambling?
  • Do you neglect your commitments or loved ones because of gambling?

Several yes answers mean it is worth using the prevention tools or contacting professional support. This is only an indicative test, not a professional diagnosis.
